I didn’t realise how powerful an overflowing river could be. The water lifted my car, sweeping it along as if it was a toy and for a few seconds I couldn’t believe what was happening.
It struck me that my car was airtight, because instead of sinking, it floated. The open sea was half a mile away and I wondered how long a car could stay afloat at sea.
I looked down out of the upstairs window, grateful that I had built the extra layer of sandbags. For now at least I would be safe if I stayed indoors.
