The Crater

Our flight and lunar landing had been textbook so I was expecting something.  It happened.

‘Hello Mission Control,’ I said, ‘did your instruments register that tremor?’

‘Yes Explorer Four.  When you leave the capsule be extra vigilant.’

I risked a look at the Earth before I climbed down the lightweight steps.  Following five minutes of effort I put my feet on the surface and reported.

‘Mission Control, I’ve reached the area.’

‘According to our calculations a new crater has been formed.  It seems impossible but it looks like it’s one kilometre deep and very close to you. Please investigate.’

‘Okay Mission Control, I’m looking into it …’
